Technology

The humble refrigerator is one of the most prolific and important devices in the modern world. We may hardly give it a thought, but this large home appliance is a part of our lives every day. It is nice to have a good one. If you are upgrading or remodeling or just want to take advantage of Holiday sales at places like JCPenney or Sears, here are a few things you might want to think about when you are buying a new fridge.

Size

Before you shop for any refrigerator, you must know the space available to put it. Measure the available space for width, height and depth. Take note of any clearance issues for the swing of the door. Don’t forget to leave several inches on all sides for ventilation. Measure twice and buy once.

Finish

Fridges come in a variety of materials, textures and finishes.  Stainless steel is trending these days and now come in colors such as slate grey, black or even red. There are also many newer finishes that look sleek and modern and hide finger prints.

Configuration

You have many choices these days on refrigerator and freezer combinations. You can get a side-by-side, which has a freezer on one side and a refrigerator on the other. Newer fridges even have the ability to switch a compartment from being a refrigerator to a freezer. You can also choose to have a freezer on the top, above the refrigerator section, or below. A particularly popular configuration these days is the French door fridge, which has double doors which open outwards. The freezer below can have one or more doors.  Be sure that you have the clearance for doors and drawers to open properly within your available space. If you have a tight space, such as in a galley kitchen, you may have a clearance problem. If so, you could get a single door fridge that has doors that open in a different direction.

Features

Each fridge will have its own set of features. Here are a few that are available. Some fridges have

temperature and humidity zones.  You can control the temperature and humidity of some refrigerators from the top to the bottom of the fridge or within drawers.  It is particularly helpful to be able to control the humidity on a drawer where you keep your fresh vegetables. This will save you hundreds of dollars per year in food cost, because it will reduce spoilage.

A particularly desirable feature these days is a filtered water dispenser. If your area has bad tap water, containing dangerous chemicals or lead, you can reduce contaminants with a fridge filter for your drinking water.  Many units also have ice dispensers that will give cubed or crushed ice.

Smart Fridges

It is a brave new world when your refrigerator has its own internet connection. Smart fridges can now hook to aps and remind you when you need to buy various food items. They can even come with a camera. Do you have milk in the fridge? You can be in the grocery store and look inside your fridge at home, to see if you have milk.  You can use a new gadget to make a dumb fridge into a smart fridge, by using a smart adapter from a company in the UK. Smarter’s FridgeCam is a wireless camera that turns any fridge into a smart fridge.

Whatever features and benefits you choose in your new fridge, the upgrade will surely beautify your kitchen and save you money.
